Job Reference #1a
Job Description: We’re looking for a storyteller, in the broadest sense of the word. We need someone unafraid to tell the story of our NGO’s current projects using mathematics, data visualization, narrative writing, photography, video, and interactive online media. We believe that the best stories come from beneficiaries, not us, so you must be willing to spend days, sometimes weeks, in villages, documenting their stories and the status of our various projects.
You will be implementing a full Monitoring & Evaluation system in conjunction with our local stakeholders, so that our work can be scrutinized by those it directly effects, as opposed to those who have no incentive to provide negative evaluations. We are not only unafraid of sharing mistakes we’ve made in the field, we expect you to find them and highlight them! We are interested in not only learning from our past missteps, but of using transparency in our work as one of our greatest selling tools to donors and partnering agencies.
Because our most valuable assets are the communities we work with, the ideal candidate must have a background in a participatory approach to development, unafraid of holding community-wide meetings to help prioritize needs and establish benchmarks our organization can then monitor.
While 3-5 years experience being creative is necessary, these skills must be balanced with a sound understanding of quantitative methods of Monitoring & Evaluation, and most importantly, using these quantitative tools to help communicate what we do.
Expect to spend 50-70% of your time overseas, working side-by-side in the communities where our projects are currently active. The remaining 30-50% of your time will be spent disseminating our work to the general public, whether it be through Op-Ed’s, blog postings, or presentations at conferences.
Experience: A Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development, with an additional Master’s degree in Education. Background in writing, photography, monitoring & evaluation, and data analysis all required. French and French Creole language competency preferred. Anyone not named Lee Cohen need not apply.
